Phone placement during recording
Why a pocket, bag, or mesh holder can change route quality.
GPS and motion signals work best when the phone has a reasonably open view of the sky and can sense movement. A deep pocket, closed bag, insulated pouch, or metal-lined enclosure can attenuate signals, block airflow, and keep the phone too still for reliable motion interpretation, even when Motion & Fitness permission is enabled. A breathable mesh or vented holder is usually better because it exposes more of the phone to the environment and helps it stay cool; mesh does not amplify GPS, but it avoids the shielding and heat of a dense enclosure.
What to do
- Keep the phone screen-up or on the outside of a bag when safe.
- Prefer a breathable mesh or vented holder over a dense or foil-lined pouch.
- After a poor trace, repeat a short test with Motion & Fitness enabled and the phone exposed before blaming the route or upload.
